Should I put Essaouira on my to-do-list?
Without a doubt: Y E S !
We only had one day left and regret not being able to stay longer.
Every day busses (Supratours) are going from Marrakesh to Essaouira. They leave at the trainstation of Marrakesh and arrive just outside the medina of Essaouira. The drive takes about 3 hours. We decided last minute to go there, but this was only possible because it was low season (February), otherwise you need to book a few days in advance. But don’t worry, I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed! That is if you like…
- a small city by the Atlantic Ocean
- fishermen and their blue boats
- fish markets and seafood
- to walk along the beach
- blue and white
- souks where you can look at ease without being bothered every 5 minutes
- to relax and ramble
- enjoy delicious streetfood
- to check out the alcohol shops outside the medina
- pastries that promise you a happy time, also known as happy cake
- seagulls maybe?
then this is the place to go!

We should mention that we went during low season, which is apparently a great time to go. During summer this place can be swarmed with tourists.
We stayed at the Emeraude Riad Hotel which is located at walking distance from the bus stop and easy to find (hooray!). This beautiful riad has the typical white and blue colors of Essaouira. The lovely rooms have a small but clean bathroom. Delicious breakfast is served on the roof – in the presence of some seagulls who’re hoping you’ll leaving something behind. We heard it can be a bit noisy during high season, but we recommend it anyway!
